Fire Restrictions in Boulder County
Fire restrictions in Boulder County can be put in place by the County Sheriff, the Board of County Commissioners, or the State of Colorado. These restrictions are designed to keep our community safe when outdoor conditions increase the risk of wildfires.
When is open burning not allowed?
Open burning is not allowed anywhere in unincorporated Boulder County whenever certain weather alerts are issued by the National Weather Service. These alerts include:
- Red Flag Warning: Issued when warm temperatures, very low humidity, and strong winds combine to create extreme fire danger.
- High Wind Warning: Strong winds (usually 40 mph or more) are expected and could easily spread fire.
- High Wind Watch: There is a chance strong winds could develop and increase the risk of fire spread.
- Fire Weather Watch: Conditions could lead to a dangerous fire situation within the next 12 to 72 hours.
If any of these alerts are active, no open burning is allowed from midnight to midnight on the date the alert is issued.
